Improved connections and a fresh look for a much-loved playspace

As a popular holiday destination, Whitianga has a variable population, with a large influx of people visiting during the summer months. This includes a large number of families with children, making the incorporation of play within public open and transitional spaces and important part of the broader upgrade of the town centre.

Thames Coromandel District Council approached Boffa Miskell to provide guidance on the upgrade of the playscape along the waterfront position in the Esplanade Reserve as part of the upgrade of key areas in Whitianga. Improved play options and a greater connection to the harbour form the focal point of the Esplanade Reserve Upgrade.

Working alongside specialist supplier Playground Creations, a vibrant play space reflective of its iconic location was produced.

Key features of the Esplanade Reserve Upgrade include the refreshed design of the playground area with widened footpaths, improved crossing visibility, and a clear waterfront connection. The redevelopment plays homage to the history of the area through nautical play features within the playground and the paving features along the walkway connecting to Carina Creek.

The much-loved playground is the centrepiece of the redevelopment. Improved connection with the surrounding area through interconnected pathways and visual sight lines helps embed the playground within the Esplanade. Formal play structures were selected to provide challenge for a range of ages and abilities which responded to the surrounding environment. Water play features enhance the setting beside the harbour further, while providing play appropriate for a largely summer visitor-based user group.

The boardwalk from Esplanade Road beside the wharf to Carina Creek gives priority to pedestrian traffic, enhancing the walkability of the township. Progressive natural play features scattered along the walk provide an informal play connection to the upgraded playground.

The playground was opened mid-2019 to immensely positive feedback from locals and visitors; and has been extensively used by all ages since.
