The Journey to Kauika Pā.

Boffa Miskell were engaged to provide design and construction documentation for a replacement pedestrian/cycle bridge over Waiorohia Steam in central Whangārei. The bridge connects the western city suburbs to the existing public library and new Whangārei civic centre currently under construction.

We were inspired by the cultural landscape narrative, obtained through collaborative design with local Hapu through hui and correspondence with the Te Parawhau Kaumatua.

The final bridge design creates a crossing experience that uses change of scale and movement in the build form to direct the users view out toward the Kauika Pā site in Pukenui Forest. While crossing in the opposite direction, the bridge creates an open welcoming experience when entering the new Whangārei civic centre.
