The Classical design of the landscape and masterplan complements the Jubilee Building and the Auckland Museum and Domain landscapes.

The Foundation Parnell has been carefully designed to welcome and host a variety of building residents, workers, and visitors. The Foundation site is located within the block bound by Parnell Road, Maunsell Road, George Street, and Titoki Street, in Parnell, Auckland; nestled within a heritage precinct it is adjacent to the Auckland Museum and Domain and has all the amenities of the city at its doorstep.

A Classical approach is embedded into the whole development, using the materials and planting to create a series of formal, peaceful spaces to experience. The Foundation is graced by presence of a large mature Pohutukawa tree, a visual marker and integral part of the central space. Boffa Miskell provided landscape architectural services focussed particularly on planting design with a high level of detail and material specification.

The landscape design was developed as a comprehensive site masterplan and considers the needs of the new residents, as well as the existing activities and uses on the site. The layout of the newer landscape design integrates with the reconfiguration of the existing landscaping and at-grade parking areas around the proposed building and other buildings within the Foundation Site, including Birthcare and the heritage-listed Jubilee and Workshop buildings.

Analysis of existing pedestrian routes and the identification of a strong East-West axis through the site from Parnell Road to Titoki Street and the Domain and Museum informed the design. The proposed layouts for carparking, communal outdoor amenity areas and pedestrian circulation routes have been carefully designed to balance the needs of both existing users, new residents, and visitors to the Foundation Site. Opportunities to link the adjacent streetscape and surrounding urban amenity into the site, welcoming the public into and through the site, have been incorporated into proposed exterior spaces.

The development was envisioned for different users of the site including Blind Low Vision NZ staff, aged care residents and visitors. Within the colonnade and adjacent plaza spaces break-out seating areas were designed to provide for the opportunity to rest, meet and socialise. Formal planting and trees are positioned to provide a green anchor to the nearby the building colonnade and façade.

The Boffa Miskell design team worked with Generus Living over a period of more than five years to support and enable their vision to come to life. The design vision was upheld and maintained throughout an intensive design and multidisciplinary coordination process. As the project was under construction the team was onsite almost daily to ensure the exacting standards for the development were achieved.
