Draft Wetlands Definitions: feedback sought by MfE
21 April 2021
This document is likely to have potential implications for a wide range of projects that involve freshwater resources.
The Ministry for the Environment has released an exposure draft of the Essential Freshwater Interpretation Guidance: Wetlands Definitions providing more guidance around the definition of natural wetlands under the National Policy Statement/ National Environmental Standards for Freshwater. It aims to provide further clarity to MfE’s intent regarding improved pasture and constructed wetland exclusions.
As with related reforms to policies around freshwater management, this document shows that central government are taking a more prescriptive and directive role. This is likely to have potential implications for a wide range of projects that involve freshwater resources, in both rural and urban areas.
Boffa Miskell ecologists, landscape planners and planners have noted several potentially contentious issues within this draft document. These issues will be of particular interest to clients involved in any form of land management.
MfE are seeking feedback on this guidance document and Boffa Miskell will be taking up the opportunity to do so. If you would like to meet to discuss the implications associated with the Essential Freshwater Interpretation Guidance: Wetlands Definitions, please contact your Boffa Miskell project manager, or one of our freshwater specialists.
