Tūpuna Maunga Strategies commended by Commonwealth Association of Planners
18 November 2020
The Commonwealth Association of Planners (CAP) Awards for Outstanding Planning Achievement in the Commonwealth were announced in a web-based event on World Town Planning Day 2020.
The awards acknowledge the very best examples of planning practice in the Commonwealth. The Tūpuna Maunga Integrated Management Plan Strategies were entered in the Commonwealth Planning for Inclusion /Diversity /Engagement category and received a commendation from the award judges.
Ngā Tūpuna Maunga o Tāmaki Makaurau are the most significant cultural, historical and geological landscapes in the region. They are sacred to Mana Whenua as taonga tuku iho (treasures handed down the generations). Local communities have an emotional connection with, and draw a sense of identity from, the Tūpuna Maunga.
Following the return of 14 Tūpuna Maunga to Ngā Mana Whenua o Tāmaki Makaurau in 2014, the Tūpuna Maunga Authority produced a single integrated management plan to set the direction for their restoration, protection and management.
The Tūpuna Maunga Integrated Management Plan Strategies are the next level of policy development for the Tūpuna Maunga of Tāmaki Makaurau / Auckland. They support the Values and Pathways in the Tūpuna Maunga Integrated Management Plan 2016. The documents outline the long-term vision and strategies to achieve an integrated outcome for all the maunga.
The CAP judges said, “The entries displayed good and innovative practices and the judges congratulate all entrants on their work. Taken together they display innovation, rigour and deep engagement with seldom-heard groups, though we would have liked to receive entries from more countries across the Commonwealth.”
The awards aim to disseminate outstanding planning practice in the Commonwealth particularly where applicable across different Commonwealth countries; demonstrate the valuable role that planners and planning have in the Commonwealth in helping to create resilient and sustainable communities and adequate shelter for all; and promote the ways in which the science and art of planning can benefit the public and improve the well-being of society in the Commonwealth and help deliver the UN Sustainable development goals.
