Restoring native plants and reflecting a unique identity within the region.

Restoring Our Native Plants is the outcome of a multi-disciplinary response to Manukau City Council's brief to produce a public resource to assist the Council with its own native plant restoration projects in reserves and open space development, as well as to provide encouragement to private landowners and community groups to restore native plant communities and increase biodiversity throughout Manukau City.

The project encompasses the recovery of indigenous forest remnants, biodiversity and future management of Manukau's native plant resources.

Boffa Miskell ecologists researched and mapped Manukau City’s ecosystem character areas, while Boffa Miskell’s landscape architect / planning team and graphic designer collaborated to incorporate the key stakeholder contributions including photographs and translated the scientific information into explanatory texts, maps, graphics and images. The project team consulted internally within Manukau City Council and with Manukau’s five iwi groups and other stakeholders including Forest and Bird.

A key feature of the booklet is the ‘eco-address’ concept which encourages readers to find ‘their place’ on the colour-coded map and match it with the information about their area’s special character and appropriate plant lists. The Guidelines promote environmental protection and enhancement, in a succinct, easy-to-follow and scientifically correct manner.
