Auckland Council partnered with New Zealand Retail Property Group (NZRPG) to create a civic heart for the new Westgate Town Centre. A design team, led by Warren & Mahoney Architects and Boffa Miskell, was commissioned to design the new library and town square.

The town square is the heart of the town centre, creating a unique identity and sense of place, and catering for a wide range of activities and users.

The concept of Shared Space, introduced into the Auckland city centre by Auckland Council and Boffa Miskell, has been applied to deliver a ‘people first’ design to serve as a focal point for the surrounding retail development.

Te Pumanawa Square is the heart of the town centre and its design emulates the Kauri (Agathis australis), a tree central to the forest that was once present here. The Square’s pavement abstracts the Kauri’s bark with the street furniture drawing influence from the form of these stately trees. The large rain gardens create a green forested identity reminiscent of western Auckland and provide high quality treatment of stormwater.
