Working with a variety of stakeholders to deliver positive environmental outcomes in a landscape steeped in history and endemism.

Boffa Miskell Ltd was contracted by Marlborough District Council to deliver the Molesworth / Rangitahi Wilding Conifer Control Programme for the 2020 – 2021 season.

Molesworth Station is New Zealand’s largest high-country station, covering almost half a million acres. The area is part of the public conservation estate and is a sanctuary for native flora and fauna. South Marlborough is considered one of the country’s top five hotspots for endemic biodiversity — in particular, for subalpine plants found nowhere else on Earth.

The Molesworth / Rangitahi Wilding Conifer Control Programme is largely funded by the Ministry for Primary Industries with objectives to contain and remove the wilding trees, in turn protecting farmland, biodiversity, iconic landscapes and sensitive water catchments. Boffa Miskell worked in collaboration with Marlborough District Council, the Department of Conservation, Pāmu New Zealand (formerly Landcorp), community trusts and landholders to design an annual works programme with specific operational plans for the control methods used to control the wilding conifers.

The 20/21 programme controlled wilding conifers in the Leatham Buffer, Saxton Severn Muller, Dillon McRae Clarence, Alma Tarndale and Maukuratawhai Operational Areas. A variety of control methods were used, such as Aerial Basal Bark Application (ABBA), Aerial Foliar Spraying Application (AFSA), and ground control.

We provided project management, operational and strategic planning, contractor management, consultation and stakeholder engagement, pest control services.
