Consultation and consent for gravel extraction, new channel design, monitoring of recovery and re-colonisation of the new channel by invertebrates and native fish.

Boffa Miskell identified a potential source of roading aggregate for the newly consented West Wind wind farm. Oteranga Stream was highly modified and no longer had permanent flows. It was proposed that the extraction process would be followed by the creation of a new channel with improved flows and habitat values.

Extensive consultation with the Department of Conservation and Regional Council convinced them of the ecological benefits of the proposal. They agreed to process the consent non-notified, and it was granted one-month following lodgement.

Stream restoration carried out in conjunction with gravel extraction has met the requirements of the conditions of consent and resulted in significant improvements to habitat quality and fish passage that have met or exceeded the restoration objectives.
