Provincial Growth Funding for Dolomite Point Redevelopment
4 December 2018
Urban designers and landscape architects from Boffa Miskell's Christchurch office assisted our client, the Department of Conservation, in preparing an application for provincial growth funding to develop a concept masterplan and visualisation for the redevelopment of the Dolomite Point tourism experience in Punakaiki.
The project includes delivery of enhanced infrastructure, including a pedestrian underpass from State Highway 6 to the Pancake Rocks walkway, as well as a new visitor centre.
"The Dolomite Point Redevelopment Project (DPRP) will create a much-improved visitor experience at the key gateway to the Pancake Rocks and the Paparoa National Park," says landscape architect Katie Chilton.
It was announced on 29 November 2018 that DPRP would receive $25.6 million in funding, as part of an $87.46 million investment from the Provincial Growth Fund (PGF) into West Coast tourism.
Dolomite Point, or Punakaiki, is one of New Zealand’s most visited spots with more than half a million people visiting the site every year. It is also a significant site for Ngāti Waewae.
The PGF grant will enable project partners to focus on improving infrastructure and visitor facilities on the inland side of the State Highway, opposite the current Punakaiki walkway entrance.
"We know that tourists to Punakaiki want to experience the region’s unique scenery and want a complementary experience that celebrates the distinct West Coast environment, culture and history. The proposed visitor centre, as part of the redevelopment project, will enable Ngāti Waewae to deliver that experience at one of New Zealand’s most stunning scenic areas,” said Francois Tumahai, Chairman of Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Waewae.
With funding for five tourism initiatives within the Buller district and a new premium service and extra capacity on KiwiRail’s world-renowned TranzAlpine Great Journey of New Zealand, this investment is expected to strengthen the entire region’s appeal to visitors from New Zealand and overseas.
“The PGF funding will develop and grow tourism options that showcase the unique West Coast culture and environment at the heart of this project,” said Regional Economic Development Minister Shane Jones.
